As IBM readies it's Blue Gene/P for 3 Petaflops, and Sun prepares Constellation for 2 Petaflops, the list of the top500 supercomputers was released. The list set a new performance record, and half of the previous systems were knocked off the list. Intel processors grew in market share, as did Opterons. I was curious to see how Linux would fare. It had previously powered 376 systems. Is it still on top?

Yes, as you can see in the chart or stats.

Linux now powers 389 systems, worth 3.1 Exaflops. it is also used in the 42 "mixed systems." Mac OS X runs 3 supercomputers, having more market share than the 2 windows systems.

So, the question you have to ask when talking about performance and reliability is, why do so many of the world's top supercomputers run Linux and not Windows? Just think on it a while.
