Gun owners know the importance of gun safety. To prove that gun owners have the knowledge to make the right choices regarding gun use, many states require gun owners to take classes to get their concealed carry license.

Concealed carry refers to the practice of carrying a concealed gun in public, such as carrying a gun in your purse or under your shirt.

States that Require a Concealed Carry Permit

10 states don't require a permit to carry a gun in public, assuming that you meet all requirements to obtain a gun legally (known as "constitutional carry"):

  • Alaska (residents only)
  • Arizona
  • Kansas
  • Maine
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • New Hampshire
  • Vermont
  • West Virginia
  • Wyoming

All other states require a permit. "Shall-issue" states will give a permit to residents who follow through with the requirements and also meet the requirements to own a gun. "May Issue" states require "good cause" before offering a concealed carry permit. Getting a permit is the most difficult in "may issue" states, which include:

  • California (residents only)
  • Connecticut
  • Deleware (residents only)
  • Hawaii
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Rhode Island

Keep in mind that states have different laws regarding whether they will accept permits from other states or not. Check before assuming your permit will apply in another part of the country.

Whether you live in a state that requires a permit or not, it's a good idea to take basic and enhanced concealed carry classes, especially if you are new to carrying a gun.

Types of Concealed Carry Permits

There are two types of concealed carry permits: basic and enhanced. Basic permits require gun owners to conceal their guns when in public. Enhanced permits allow holders to carry their gun concealed or open (such as on the hip in a holster). Basic permits expire, but users can get lifetime enhanced concealed carry permits.
