If you are interacting with your public, to protect your health and the health around you of others during this pandemic, you may be asked or required to wear a face mask or a face shield. If you choose to wear a reusable face shield, it is important that you understand how to properly put it on, take it off, and clean it.

Thing #1: Use a Shield With a Mask

A face shield helps protect your entire face, including your eyes, from encountering droplets that can spread the COVID-19 virus. However, that doesn't mean that you should forgo wearing a face mask unless your profession depends upon seeing your entire face. Wearing a face mask with a face shield will help increase your level of protection.

For example, if you work with deaf students where lip reading is an important part of the communication process, then a face shield may be necessary.

Thing #2: Carefully Put the Shield On

Before putting on the shield, wash your hands with soap and water. You want to have clean hands to keep the shield clean.

Then, grab the shield by the straps and avoid touching the front of it. Bend forward and place the elastic band around the back of your head, allowing the foam on the front to rest on your forehead.

Once it is in place, make sure that it covers both the front and side of your face. The top should be just above your eyebrows, and the bottom should be below your chin. Keep the shield down and adjust the elastic if it is not tight enough.

If you are wearing a face mask with your shield, put your mask on before you put on your shield.

Thing #3: Minimize Touch When Taking It Off

When you take your shield off, you will want to remove any other protective gear you may be wearing first. Then, you are going to want to wash your hands.

Bend your head forward a little bit, and then grab onto the straps where it meets with your temple and pull the mask straight up and over your head, avoiding bringing it into contact with your face.

Thing #4: Carefully Clean

Wipe down each side of the shield with a wet cloth with a hospital-grade disinfectant solution. Then, wash the outside with clean, warm water to remove the solution. Dry it off with a microfiber cloth. Use clean hands throughout the process.

A face shield is one way to reduce the spread of COVID-19. When taking it on and off, avoid touching the covering, and handle it using the straps that hold it in place. Clean and sanitize after each use.
