If you enjoy a rich, dark cup of flavored coffee, there are some steps you can take to make sure the ground beans you have stored are in the best condition at all times. Failing to store your coffee appropriately can lead to a less robust or weakened taste, especially in flavored coffees like double chocolate ground coffee. Some flavored coffees may even have an altered taste if they are not stored correctly. This will make it difficult to distinguish what flavor you are consuming altogether. Here are some steps you can take to ensure your ground coffee remains as fresh as it was the day you had purchased it.
Avoid Moisture At All Costs
If your coffee becomes wet, much of the flavor within each ground piece will dilute. There will be a need to dry the coffee grounds before they are brewed in a coffee machine as well. Eliminating all moisture sources from around your stored coffee is best. Do not place your coffee near a sink where it is at risk of falling from a ledge and ending up saturated. Keep your coffee out of your refrigerator as condensation within the unit can cause clumping of the grounds if they make their way into the container. Be sure to store your coffee in a dry area of your home as well and check that the lid is secure before placing it in this spot.
Keep Your Ground Coffee Away From Excessive Heat
Your ground coffee will fare best in a spot where temperatures are not too hot. Room temperature is adequate for the storage of coffee. On hotter days, it is a good idea to run an air conditioner in the area where your coffee is being stored. Alternately, bring your coffee to a cooler area of the home so it is less likely to suffer from damage from heat. The basement, a crawlspace, or the garage, are good places to check to see if they are cooler in temperature.
If you do not have an air conditioner, consider setting your container of coffee inside a bucket of ice until the warm spell breaks. Make sure to dump out the bowl of melted water and refill it with new ice cubes when necessary. Take care in not getting any of this moisture into the container.
Place Your Coffee In A Spot Away From Light
It is best to keep your coffee stored in an opaque or solid-colored container, Clear canisters will allow light to get to your coffee, altering its taste as a result. When you store your container, it should not be put in a spot near windows or light bulbs so the coffee contained within will not be subjected to illumination should you forget to put the lid back on the container for any length of time.
