Learn how to make a personalized sign installation piece over your desk with a wooden box, string of Christmas lights, and some basic craft supplies. After you have finished the project, the sign will display the message that you have created, while lighting up your work area.

Materials

  • wooden box (shallow depth)
  • foam block
  • craft glue
  • string of Christmas lights
  • power drill
  • poster board
  • measuring tape
  • scissors
  • stencils
  • pencil
  • cutting board
  • utility knife
  • tissue paper
  • masking tape
  • screws

Prepare The Back Of The Sign

Place a shallow, wooden box on a flat surface. The box will be used as the back of the sign that you are making and will hold the string of Christmas lights. Apply an even layer of craft glue to one side of a foam block and press it down firmly in the center, bottom of the box. Wait several minutes for the glue to dry.

Purchase a short string of Christmas bulbs. Secure the bulbs that are connected to the electrical cord by pressing the end of each one firmly into the foam. Most strings of lights have small holders that surround the bulbs. The holders have jagged ends that will easily puncture the foam.

Drill a hole in one of the corners on the back of the box. Make sure that the hole is wide enough so that the electrical cord will fit through it. Insert the end of the cord through the hole and pull on it until only the part that is connected to the bulbs remains in the box.

Prepare The Cover And Install The Sign

Use scissors to cut a piece of poster board that is the same length and width as the wooden box. Decide what type of message you would like your sign to display. Place stencils that depict the message on the front of the poster board and trace them with a pencil. Place the poster board on a cutting board and cut out the letters with a utility knife. Glue a piece of tissue paper to the back of the poster board. Wait for the glue to dry.

Place the poster board on top of the wooden box. Secure the poster board by placing strips of masking tape around the edges. Set the finished sign over the center of your desk. Use a drill to secure the box to the wall with screws. Plug in the electrical cord. The sign will enhance the area that your desk is located in and will make it easier for you to see what you are doing.
